Can I merge info into audience fields during import instead of overwriting?

We get people signing up to our email list from a variety of sources, and we're finding that we often get current audience members signing up again (say, as part of a contest entry). Is there a way to create an audience field that will let me to track multiple options? Specifically, a type of field that won't overwrite, but ad to what is already in the field. So if I have my "Source" for member A listed as x, and they then sign up to our list again through y, and my import spreadsheet shows the "Source" as y, I'd like MyEmma to track this as x and y.

It sounds like you have some happy and engaged email subscribers. Well done! I'm betting you'll be better able to manage those repeat signups with custom fields of the radio, checkbox or select multiple variety (most likely the latter).

To see if that would be the right fit for your needs and review the set up process, please visit this page in our help documentation.

Once you've had a chance to check that out, just let me know if you have any questions and we'll take it from there.

I understand how to use the radio, checkbox, or multiple variety fields if I am doing one single import. My concern (and I've done some tests to confirm this is the case) is that if I already have John Smith in as option "A" and I do an import with Add & Update and that spreadsheet ONLY lists him as option "B", it removes any record of option "A".

I sometimes get a list of 1,000 people from a new source, and I want to add that information to MyEmma. Let's say I already have half in MyEmma, and I have their source as "ABC." When I prepare my spreadsheet of the 1,000 people, which I have gotten from source XYZ", it will only have "XYZ" in the spreadsheet. Thus when I upload, I will lose "ABC" for 500 people. Is there a way around that? I can't exactly do this manually as it would take forever.

Thanks for providing some additional context. I wish I had a better solution, but you're right that the nature of add & update is to overwrite the previous entry for any given field rather than add to it. For the way you're currently managing your audience, it sounds like you need a merge function, and Emma doesn't have that functionality in place right now. As such, I think your best bet would be to export the current group, and merge the exported spreadsheet with the new spreadsheet in Excel before importing the updated list.
