Using the API to add members to group, does the new member have to opt in?

I have been tasked with doing some analysis on Emma and a couple of competitors and wanted to confirm my first finding,

One competitor requires that the newly added member to a list/group MUST 'OptIn' via a confirmation email.  The newly added member is not accessible for mailings until they have OptedIn.  I haven't seen that same requirement in Emma.  My testing with Emma using the API has allowed me to add members to a group immediately, they appear to be in active status and will be included in mailings.

So, it looks like I can add members to Emma and they are immediately included in mailing associated with the group.  NO OptIn is required by the new member.

Is that a true statement?

Hi there,

Great question! Emma does not require new members to confirm their opt in when they sign up or are added to an audience group. If someone signs up using a signup form a customer provides, s/he can receive a confirmation email asking him/her to confirm opting in, but he/she does not need to confirm in order to receive Emma email marketing campaigns.

I hope this helps. Please let us know if you have any questions!

Hi there,

Thought I would add a little clarification here. Email addresses added to the account do need to abide by our permission policy, which states:

To send an email to someone using Emma, that recipient must be:
- Someone who is a customer, member or subscriber of your business or organization,
- Someone who has specifically asked to receive your emails by opting in or signing up in some way, or
- Someone who has bought a product or service from you in the past 18 months

You may find this information on our Permission and Privacy Policy handy: http://myemma.com/permission-and-privacy-policy

When someone confirms opt in, s/he essentially confirms that s/he did in fact signup for your campaigns and wants to receive them; opt-in confirmation simply allows you to identify who your most interested subscribers may be.

I hope this helps!
