Can I use an if/then statement for email personalization depending on if a person has a nickname?

We have nicknames for many people on our list, and I would like the email to say Dear <NICKNAME>, or if we don't have a nickname, then Dear <FIRST NAME>.  Is this possible in Emma?

I can't really think of an easy way of doing this but here's what I'd do if the data is already in Emma:

- generate a segment where all of the nicknames are blank and the first name is not. Export the data.
- import again using your export data file this time assigning first name to nickname for this subset only.

Hope this helps.

Hi CAS -- Great question!

MainSpring's suggestion is right on track here! You can add personalization for any member field in your account. So, once you've created the Nickname field, you'll be able to select that option from the personalization list when building your mailing. You can read more on how to add that personalization here.

Once you have the nicknames and first names in your account, you can use the segment tool to isolate those contacts that do and do not have nicknames. Then you can simply send a version of your mailing personalized with <NICKNAME> to the segment of contacts that do have nicknames and a version personalized with <FIRST NAME> to the segment with no nicknames. Here's more on how to build those contact information segments.

I hope this helps!
