Trouble creating a segment using the state field

Our audience is simple list, selected by opt-in elsewhere.  The only segments I need to separate are by state.  However, our states are stored by the two-letter abbreviation, and when I use the selector for state, I only get equals or does not equal and then a pre-configured drop-down list of fully-written-out state names.  What I need is contains so I can enter the two-letter abbreviation.  Help! is there a way to do a custom query?

Searching help doesn't yield anything specific to this situation and the forums give 48 pages of results :-(

FF ESR 38.5.2 but I don't imagine that's relevant to this problem.

Hey Loh,

Understand your frustration here. Emma's system does seem to match States via "full text" instead of abbreviations. Do you normally import members in bulk?

Thanks,
Kyle

Hi there!

It is true that the State contact field contains the state spelled out completely so when running a segment based on this field, you would need to select either equals, does not equal, is empty or is not empty.  A workaround would be to export your full audience list from Emma then create an additional short answer contact field for State and re-import your list with the abbreviations for state.    Once the abbreviated states are imported to your audience, you would then be able to run a segment with "contains" as part of the criteria.

Let me know if you have any questions or if there is anything else I can do to help!

Hey Damian, wondering if you can assist with something.

We previously uploaded our data as-is (meaning abbreviated states) in a text State field that we created. If we export the list and change all abbreviations to the full state name, will it populate correctly when segmenting from the state dropdown field? Hoping this makes sense.

We've come to realize that doing it the abbreviated way is far more of a pain than it's worth, if what I'm asking above is possible. This way, we can require the dropdown moving forward, versus the text field where they have the option to type it any way they want; Pennsylvania, Penn., PA. Trying to avoid a bigger mess in the future.

If it helps, I'm looking in the VFC account, but would like to change all of the accounts asap if this works.

Hi Ashley!

Greg with Emma Support, stepping in for Damian.

What you're describing will definitely work. I agree, it's some extra work now, but will make things easier going forward!
