contact fields not updated by repeat import

Yesterday I imported to an audience group and realized later one of the fields was wrong so I created a new group and imported to the new list to that group. I'm now seeing that the fields are still wrong even though I am definitely using the new list. Does anyone know if Emma automatically copies the field info from members of an existing group if the emails are the same?

Happy Friday, Zach!

Emma uses the email address as the unique identifier, so there's just one contact record for each email address, no matter how many or how few groups in which that email address is included. When you did the second import, did you correct the field mappings that were mapped incorrectly the first go around? If so, on the second import process, did you do the "add only" or "add and update" import style?

If you did the "add only" option during the second import, then that's exactly the issue here. While "add only" adds everyone in your spreadsheet to the group you've specified, it doesn't update any of the other fields you've mapped for email addresses already stored anywhere in your Emma audience. During that second import process, once you'd corrected the field mappings, the "add and update" option would be the way to go to update the fields you'd mapped for contacts already stored in your Emma audience. If you'd like to read a little more on the add only vs. add and update options, please check out this Resource Center article on importing audience contacts.

Hope this clears things up! I saw that you also emailed and left a voicemail on this issue, so I'm hoping we can knock it all out here on this Emma Community thread. If there's anything that still needs to be addressed from the voicemail or separate email, please give me a shout here. Always happy to help!

Hi Katie,

Thanks for the reply. Yes I clicked add only as I thought I didn't want to update. So you are saying I should do add AND update?

Hi there, Zach.

That's exactly right -- if you want to update the mapped fields other than email for contacts already in your audience, then the "add and update" import method is the way to go. If you're interested, this Resource Center article goes a little more in-depth on the differences between the two import methods.

Please let me know here if I can help further on the import process!

Hi -- I have a related question re Add & Update.  Let's say I want to do an import of existing contacts so that I can add the contact's company name, which is not currently on the record.

My import file contains only four columns: first name, last name, email address and company name, and I do Add & Update. Will this have any effect on other contact fields? In other words will other contact information such as address or birthday be wiped out because it is not in my import and I am telling Emma to update?

I am almost positive you're going to say no but I wanted to be sure. Thanks!

Good afternoon, Laurie.

When you do the add and update import style, any fields that you've mapped on the "map your fields" screen will be updated for the contacts already in your audience. If you ONLY want to update company name and not the other fields, then I'd recommend only mapping the company name and email address fields during the import process and using the "add and update" import method. During the "map your fields" step of the import process, for any field dropdowns set to "ignore," nothing will be updated about those fields for your existing contacts.

If I can provide any further clarification on this, please give me a shout. Always happy to help!

So if the birthday field isn't mapped it won't be touched. Thanks!
