Exclude people who are exclusively in a single group

When building a search/segment, it's easy to exclude everyone who is in a particular group.  But I can't figure out a way to exclude everyone who is ONLY in a particular group.   Here's the scenario:

Donors: 1500 people
Volunteers: 500 people
Supporters: 3000 people

Now, obviously, some people are in all three groups, or two of the three, and some are in just one group.

Let's say that, for whatever reason, we want to send a fundraising email to everyone -- but exclude people who are exclusively on the volunteers list.  In other words, if you're both a donor and a volunteer, you'll get the email.  But if you're just on the volunteers list, you won't.

The easy answer is: Build an email and include the donors list and the supporters list.  Don't "exclude" anyone -- just don't include the volunteers.

But that doesn't work if you have a couple hundred groups.  How can we build a search that says "identify everyone is in this group and only this group"?

Hi there -- Great question!

You can accomplish this by building one segment with 2 different criteria levels. Here's how I did this:

The first level includes all of the groups mentioned using the *any of the above* option. This option will find anyone who may be in one of those groups, rather than only finding contacts who are for sure in all three groups.

The second level simply excludes the Volunteers.

So, what you end up with is anyone in your list who *may be* in any of the first three groups but then definitely excludes anyone who is in the Volunteers group.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Emily, I'm not sure I understand your solution.  That said, any solution that involves picking all the groups won't work.

Again, I'm looking for a solution in scenarios where if you've got a couple hundred groups -- especially where you expect the segment to last for months, and you're constantly adding and removing groups.

Hi there -- I may have misunderstood your question! I'm digging in here with a few of my teammates to see if we can find a simple solution. I'll reach out when I know more!

Hi again -- I'm not finding a simple one-step solution here based on the current segment functionality. I'm going to add a feature request to add an "only in this group" option to the segmenting tool. Hopefully that will gain some traction with our development team!

I realized recently that you've got that LIMBO search -- "not in any group".  Man, it seems like it'd be a short step from there to "not in any group, except this one".

Hi, I'm stepping in for Emily. I chatted with our Product Team, and while we're keen to revisit our segment builder tool, we aren't positive that this will be included in our first pass, whenever that first pass happens.

I'm marking this as Not Planned for now, since we don't have structure around a deadline yet, and I'll update this conversation and its status if work moves closer. Thank you for sharing this with us!
