Create exclusion/suppression lists for quick segmentation sending

I think it would be a huge help and time-saver to have exclusion or suppression lists -- the ability to specify at the time of sending a group or segment you want excluded from the send. This would help allow very quick segmentation based on already-existing groups and segments.

For example:

Say I want to send a promotion to all of my Promos subscribers, except those who live in the Atlanta, GA area. Currently, this is my workflow:
  1. Create a new segment called Atlanta that contains subscribers in the Promos & News group, and who live within 20 miles of Atlanta.
  2. Copy that segment to a new group called Atlanta Peeps
  3. Create a new segment called "Atlanta Excluded" that contains subscribers in the Promos & News group, but NOT in the Atlanta Peeps group.
  4. Send my email to that new segment
And now, every time I want to repeat this send, I have to:
  1. Refresh the original Atlanta segment
  2. Delete the Atlanta Peeps group and recreate based on the updated Atlanta segment
  3. Refresh the Atlanta Excluded segment
It would be 11ty billion times easier to:
  1. Refresh the Atlanta segment
  2. On the send screen, send to Promos & News, exclude Atlanta

Hi Matt,

Thanks for the feedback. We have some concepts that we're working on for the fall that will put segmentation a little more front-and-center while making it easier to use and easier to leverage in other parts of the Emma experience.

At the moment, your example could be accomplished through the concept we're running with. We don't have a definitive timeline for this work yet. When we started thinking about creating a more sophisticated product experience wrapped in an a more approachable user experience, we decided to dive into the audience side of things first as we believe that if we can deliver the right ways to segment and visualize it will lend itself well to how you can leverage this data when creating or automating. I'm excited to share some more definitive concepts as we have them. At the moment, the fresh take on segmenting will likely be rolled into the ways we're thinking about improving our autoresponder experience. You should see some improvements start to roll out this fall.

Thanks again for the feedback, and please don't hesitate if you have other thoughts or suggestions on this topic, or if you have any other product questions for me.

Best,
David

I have similar situations where better 'on the fly' segmenting would be great. For example, I'll send an email to a group of recipients from their sales person and then, after, want to send another email to another list that includes recipients from the first email. Being able to exclude the first set from the second set (and the groups change every time so a segment doesn't do it.) would be very helpful.

I rarely use segments. They are pretty frustrating and I'm always left wondering 'Did I do that right?'

Or sending a follow-up campaign to a group, but excluding all who already replied ....Exclusion options are essential--please, please, please get this going soon!

Thanks for adding your vote! I'm curious: When you say you'd like to exclude all who replied, do you mean all who, say, responded via your Emma survey? I just want to make sure I have straight the type of engagement that's important to you. :)

Sure, Katie:

So, if I send a campaign, and 20% of my audience clicks the call to action, I'd like to exclude them from my next mailing targeted at same audience; i.e., only send to the the "no-clicks."  I hope that helps you understand what I meant.  Thanks!

Cool, got it -- That makes perfect sense! I'm sure you know you can already achieve this right now, using segmentation, but I hear you that it could be made easier. :)

so, if I segment in the scenario above, will I end up with two lists: one list of 80% of my contacts (the "no-clicks"), and another list with the remaining 20% (the "click-throughs")?  Or does it only give me a new list with the 20% click-through people?  I'm not clear on this.

You'll have two groups and one segment: The first group is the group you originally sent to, the second group is the contacts who clicked and the segment is what you've created to find the contacts in the first group who aren't in the second group (i.e., those who did not click).

I have those steps in this conversation, albeit to find contacts who didn't open. You'll follow the same steps, except first clicking on the contacts who clicked instead of the contacts who opened while looking at your mailing response.

Thanks, Katie.  I guess I also need to better understand the distinction between "group" and "segment."  Seems like your explanation above created a new "group" out of one segment, but not the other....?

Sure, I'm glad to chat through those differences! Want to create a new conversation, and we'll talk about how to use groups vs. segments?

Wondering if there has been any updates on the original post?

In my situation, we are looking to send an event reminder email, but exclude people that have already registered. So ideally we would like to upload a list of registered and exclude them from receiving the message, while still using the original list. Thanks!

Hi! It sounds like you're trying to do this. There isn't a change to our plans there, but I'll let you know if/when there's news!

Has any update been made on the OP's request from 10 months ago regarding the ability to import suppression lists? I have about 300 records I have to find and manually delete otherwise, so I'm hoping there's an automatic way to do this.

Hi PrimeLink -- This is still really high on our priority list! We're doing some behind the scenes work to the audience that will make this kind of expanded functionality possible. I'll be sure to update this thread when I have a sense of timeline for this feature.

Suppress lists accessed when sending would be VERY important functionality for us.

Any update on this...the feature request was 2 years old.  We have a big need to take a list of clients and NOT email people who purchased in the last 6 months.  Any solutions.

Hey Darrin -- I don't have anything new since my Sept. 4th update. We're still laying some of the groundwork in our audience to be able to build out features like this. I'll update you here when I have more info!!

This is a BIG issue for us.  We want to email our lists until the they buy, once they buy we want to hold them out of emails until the next sales cycle. FYI we produce trade shows.

Hey guys! Thanks for all of your input here. We're excited to announce the launch of a new beta, the ability to exclude a segment from receiving your mailing. We've posted details on that release here, and are excited to get it in front of you to see how it will meet your needs! We've turned it on for several of you already, so if you don't see this in your account just give us a shout here. We'll get it flipped on for you.
