My co-workers and I are all currently unable to import mailing list files in any format--XLS, XLSX, or CSV. No matter what the file is named, we see the following error when trying to import: "Invalid File Name. Your file name contains a special character that is preventing your file from importing. Rename your file before attempting to upload again."

We have an important mailing that needs to go out either this afternoon or first thing on Monday. Help!

I haven't been able to upload anything in the last two days from my computer. Tried all the file types. I just get an "Import Failed"

Thanks for alerting us about those import problems. I have jumped into both accounts (Chevron Business Point and Texas PTA) and was able to complete a test import into both accounts.

If you are still unable to import anything into your account, why don't you try uploading the spreadsheet you are trying to use into your document library and let me know that it is there. I will gladly take a look at the list you're trying to import and see what might be causing that hang-up.

I'll be looking for your reply!

Hi Rachel,

We are still receiving the same error when trying to import a mailing list. ("Invalid File Name. Your file name contains a special character that is preventing your file from importing. Rename your file before attempting to upload again." )

As per your suggestion, I will import the following Excel mailing list, containing 5566 email addresses, to Documents:

Retail_EM_All_Brand_March_2014.xlsx

Thanks for your assistance. This is a very frustrating issue, and we have a Fraud Alert mailing that absolutely MUST go out today.

regards,
Karin

I still got an import error. I was able to upload a different list last week, but this one is giving me trouble.

Good morning! Stepping in here for Rachel and I just posted a few different options for Chevron below. Can you please attempt these as well to see if this does the trick?

Thanks!

Good morning Catherine! Can you please upload your Excel file to your document library in Emma? I’ll grab the file from there, so I can continue to do some additional digging.

Thanks!

Hey Catherine! That import is good to go and I’ve imported them into a group called EMMA TESTING. I did a little trick with the spreadsheet to remove any hidden formatting and then it took with no trouble. Here are those steps in case you need them for future reference. Please let me know if I can assist further.
  • Open the file in Excel, and copy all of the information
  • Open a new worksheet
  • Click the edit button and select “Paste Special”
  • Select “values” but nothing else and paste
  • Save that file as an .xls or .xlsx file

Good morning, Rachel, any update on this issue? Per your suggestion, I uploaded our mailing list to Documents yesterday. Were you able to import it as a new mailing list?

Thanks!

Thank you, Tyler. Would you be able to upload that list to create a new email list (same name as file..."EM Only March 2014")? We need to send a mailing out very soon to that particular user group.

Thanks!

Good morning Karin! I’ve imported that list to a group called EMMA TESTING and it is good to go. You can of course change the name of the group, but those folks are definitely in there now.

I’ll keep you posted on what we find on the import issue.

Thanks!

Good morning Karin! We’re still continuing to dig on this import deal, but have not yet been successful in recreating on our end. I’ve added a couple of Excel documents to your document library. One is called emmatestone while the other is emmatesttwo. One is your original data with all formatting removed and the other is just a file with my colleagues email address in it. Can you please save these files to your desktop and give them a shot importing into your Emma account.

I also wanted to see if you are in compatibility mode on your computer. If so, could you please try turning this off and see if this makes a difference when importing. Thank you so much for your patience and willingness to help. I’m hoping these items will shed some additional light.

Thanks!

Good morning, Tyler. Appreciate your continuing efforts to assist with this odd problem...I downloaded your test files this morning, and tried importing them as new Audience imports. Received the same error for both files: Invalid File Name.Your file name contains a special character that is preventing your file from importing. Rename your file before attempting to upload again.

>I also wanted to see if you are in compatibility mode on your computer.

If you are referring to my Office setting, I don't believe we are using compatibility mode. The mailing addresses are retrieved from our customer database as .csv files. I have tried importing new mailing lists as .csv, .xls, and .xlsx and all of them are producing the same error, no matter what they're named.

Hello,

I am having this issue as well. We usually do four imports per month. I have tried three of my four files and all are giving me this error. There are no unusual characters in the folder or file names. We update these sames files each month with our refreshed information so the file names and file types are the same as always. Any insight into this issue? I am using IE8, which has not been a problem before.

Thanks!

Good morning! Can you please attempt to upgrade your browser to at least IE9 as 8 is a version which we no longer support. Or do you perhaps have Firefox and/or Chrome which you could attempt to use to see if you still run into the same issues? If this does not do the trick, please see the recommendations above on the comment with Chevron Business Point and let me know if you still run into troubles.

Thanks!

I wanted to thank everyone for their assistance and taking the time to help us troubleshoot this import issue. I’ve shared all of this information with our tech specialists team as they continue to dig. There is actually a separate Community conversation which we’ll continue to update once we have more info on this bug if you’d like to follow along. I’ve noted each of your accounts as being effected by this as well.

Thanks again!

Thank you for the update, Tyler. I was able to locate a version of Firefox for our regulated computing environment, installed it in my test environment, and am happy to report that I was able to successfully import a new mailing list. So, yes, the import issue does indeed seem to be Internet Explorer-specific.

Karin
