How do I change the background color of an entire sidebar column?

One of the editors on a sub-account has a newsletter that she designed with a right sidebar column that had a light green background color. This month, that background color mysteriously disappeared and we can't figure out how to bring it back. We can color the backgrounds of each individual block within the sidebar column, but that creates uncolored gaps between blocks and we are unable to extend the colored background up and down the full length of the column (even areas without content). How can we add a background color to an entire column, not just the blocks within the column? We used to be able to do it, but not anymore.

We use Firefox with Emma.

Thanks.

Hello City of Vancouver!

Thank you for the question. This is a good one. There is a way to fully color the background of a right sidebar and you are half-way there in your description. First, you do need to assign the background color to all the content blocks in the column. The reason for the white gaps between those blocks is because Emma adds 5px of top, bottom, right, and left margin between the blocks by default. You can toggle the margin to zero by going into the settings for each content block. Hover over the block and click on the yellow gear icon to access the block settings. Then, click on the tiny gear in the lower left corner of the box that appears. It will look like this:

Notice in the screenshot the tweaks I made. You'll want to do something similar, depending on where you're seeing white space for that block. Set the margin to '0' wherever you see white space in that block.  Give that a try and let me know if you need further assistance with this! Happy to help.

OK. The problem still remains with extending the colored background on the column all the way down to the footer of the email. Is there a way to extend the green background all the way down without any content?

The really annoying part is that we used to be able to select a background color for the entire column in the upper horizontal menu, but for some reason that functionality is now gone. Do you know why this was removed?

Hi again!

Could you pass along to me the name of the campaign you're working with? I'll jump in and see if there is a way outside of what I told you. Each template has different formatting capabilities, so I'll be glad to have a look for you. Thanks!

We already sent the campaign out that was mysteriously missing the colored background. It's in the sent campaign tab now under the Parks and Recreation Department subaccount and is titled "Vancouver Volunteer Newsletter - August and September 2016."

An example of what we want the newsletter to look like (and how it used to look) is in the same sent campaign tab in the same subaccount and is titled "Vancouver Volunteer Newsletter - April/May 2016."

Hello again!

Thank you for passing along those details. There is a resolution to this! The 'Volunteer Template' you're using has an option at the top for 'right sidebar', with which you can choose a background color for that right side column. So, it's actually easier than I previously described. See the screenshot below:

Sorry for the runaround with this!  You can check out the example copy I created called 'support copy', in your unsent tab.  I hope this is what you're looking for, but if you have lingering questions for me, I'd be glad to assist with those.

I just opened a new template (Save the Date) and want to change the background color, but those options  you're pointing to aren't visible to me.  The only editing options I have are "Columns" and "Template" - no other links are available in that section.  How can I change the BLUE to another color?

Excellent! Thank you. That color picker used to be in the horizontal menu itself and we couldn't find it anymore.
