How can I create a group that will include other groups and update automatically?

Argh- I am new to Emma - just started using it last year, and only did a few mailings. When I search this topic, I get a 3 year old conversation that has broken links. The issue is:
I set up several groups. I have questions on group management and I apologize if the answers are out there and I have not been able to find them.
1-  I want to "redefine" one of my groups (call it A)  to include another smaller group (call it Z).  I see that I can copy my current contacts from Z group to A group, but as more contacts are added to Z group, will they automatically add to A group?  Or is there a way to redefine A group to always include Z group?
2- It looks like I might have contacts that are not assigned to a group and I can't find them. Again, the related articles I found had broken links and some of what I found had references to "buttons" that I don't have on my main audience screen.

Please help, thank you.

Hi there,

Apologies we weren't able to get in touch with you before the weekend and that you weren't able to find the help you needed with our resources.  I do want to let you know that we are currently in the process to make it easier for our users to search through our documentation.

That being said, I'd be more than happy to explain a good way to manage your audience in this way.

If we are to use your example of two groups (A and Z) and we're looking to keep Group A up to date without having to add contacts to both Group A and Z each time, then we'd be looking to use the segment tool.  A segment updates each time it's opened or used, so if we were to create a segment based on audience groups, then include folks in both group A or Z then that segment would encompass both groups, and keep up to date when a contact is added to either group (when the segment is rerun).  If you haven't yet had an opportunity to use the segment builder then take a look at our Resource Center article on segment creation here.

You'll also find information in that article about finding "Limbo" contacts, which is the name given to contacts with no group membership.  You'll be able to find them if you run a segment based on audience groups, then select Limbo as the group.  From the list you're presented you'll be able to copy those guys into a group.

To address the group number discrepancy, it looks to be up to date now.  On occasions the group count display can run a little behind. This can be related back to a few different variables such as how that contact was added to the group (via import, integration, signup form etc) or removed.    If you do encounter further discrepancies please don't hesitate to let us know.

Finally, I also wanted to share with you our Welcome page.  Our Welcome page is useful to have as a bookmark, as it has links to our Resource Center, Community and Emma 101, as well as a tonne of useful Email Marketing info!

Please don't hesitate to ask me any follow-up questions here  -- I'll do my best to make sure you feel like you're getting the help you need :)

I also just want to point out that I changed the name of the post so hopefully if other folks have the same question they can find it.

This is what Sam was referring to in regards to ANY/ALL logic.

Changing that dropdown from ALL to ANY changes the logic that's used to create the segment from AND statements to OR statements.

When I made that change in your segment, it's now showing up as having 22706 active contacts in that list.  (I'm making an assumption here that you're referring to the "Compass Newsletter" segment... please forgive me if I'm wrong)

Now you can send to this SEGMENT instead of choosing all of the Groups individually.  The best part about segments is that they will continue to update as you add people in to any of the groups that it is pulling from, so you don't have to manually update it.
