How to code check box items in the API

We are working with the API and have most of the fields designated.  However, with a check box menu of items, are these also considered 'fields' from an API standpoint and not 'groups'?

And, if so, then we would use the shortcut name?  Would we need to use underscores or dashes?

Thanks in advance,

I am Toms Developer, We have create a new checkbox field in the signup form
And we using http://api.myemma.com/php_signup_example.html for remote signup
Now the query is how do we pass the checkbox data from php ?
Should we pass an array if yes then what fieldnames should be used... how do I find the field names for each checkbox option
I found this reply https://community.myemma.com/emma/topics/multi_select_box_sent_via_api_showing_value_as_array?topic-...
but it is not clear what fieldnames should be used
An example would really help
