If you delete a contact from an audience segment, are you deleting the contact from the audience in general?

(Firefox 37.0) I've created a segment from an audience group, but would like to remove a few of the contacts from the segment. If I delete from the segment, am I also deleting them from the overall audience? Are they GONE?

When you delete a record, you are given the option to remove it only from the group or from all groups and audience: http://grab.by/GwoE

Hope this helps.

This is no longer true. When I go to delete my only option is "remove from all groups and audience." What am I doing wrong here? I just want to remove addresses from a segment I intend to delete and there doesn't seem to be a way to do that anymore.

Hi Emilie -- Sorry for the confusion here. The screenshot shared above is specific to groups. I should have made that distinction here earlier to clarify that. You do have both options when deleting contacts from a group, but only the "remove from all groups and audience" option when deleting a segment.

This is because segments are dynamic. Since those addresses are pulled in through a search function, rather than added manually, you're not able to manually remove them from the segment. Segments are typically used to locate and isolate contacts based on the criteria specified in the segment with the goal of either sending specifically to that list or deleting the entire list.

If you're looking to delete the entire list in the segment, excluding a few addresses, I'd suggest copying that segment to a group. You can then remove those few addresses from the group, and delete the entire list in the group (from the entire audience). However, if you just need to delete the actual segment but not the contacts in it, you can do that from the main Audience page. Deleting the segment there from the list of segments simply deletes that search record, rather than deleting all of the contacts in the search.

I hope that helps! Let me know if I can clarify anything for you. :)

That's the perfect answer, Emily. And explains why it wasn't working quite as I expected. Can you tell me how to move the segment to a group? Do I copy, rename, etc.? And perhaps Emma might rethink not letting us delete names from a segment since, such as in my case, I generated a list of addresses who hadn't opened in a year and emailed them explaining I would delete them if I didn't hear from them. Many replied. However you DO have a way to fix this, even if it elongates the process, and I am grateful.

Happy I could help! Ah, that does sound like a unique scenario. I believe it would require some development resources to make that change, since the segment operates solely on search functionality. Even if you were able to delete those folks from the segment, saving or editing the segment details would re-run the search and pull those folks in again, because technically they still meet the search criteria you specified.

In this case, using the segment to locate those addresses and then copying that segment to a group (select all in segment, hit copy and choose groups - here you can create a new group if needed) in order to manipulate that list is the best approach. :)

It's taking awhile to populate, but I'm pretty sure it will. Phone support helped, too. I appreciate how helpful everyone has been on this.
