Is the reason for the large number of bounces the type of email I'm sending from?

I usually send from our verified email domain (, but we often have cases where we're sending from a board member's personal email (,, etc.). Recently we sent out an email using an address and recieved a striking number of bounces. Could that be the reason?

You got it. All of the major freemail providers have implemented restrictions on who can send email using their domains, in order to cut down on the amount of spam that is impersonating them. They have essentially told all email receivers to reject any email that claims to be from their domain that didn't originate from their systems. To be able to send using an email address for example, you must use's webmail system to do so. Using any other mail sender, such as Emma, or Comcast, or other ESP/ISP will result in the increased bounces you have seen.

Not all receivers honor those requests just yet, so some of them will still go through. Over time, those that don't will be fewer and fewer and eventually none will accept those messages any longer. When you send a message through Emma and change the From or RSVP address for the mailing to be at one of those domains, you should see a warning message about this. It is OK to use those addresses as the Reply-To address for any mailing.

To ensure the highest levels of delivery, you should use a domain associated directly with your organization, and not a freemail domain.
