How to handle multiple email addresses for a contact

If a contact has multiple email addresses, should I enter those each as a separate contact or use a colon to separate the email addresses in the "email" field?

We usually enter them as separate email addresses. That way, we can later come back and determine which address was more effective in getting a response from the contact.

We've had this, especially where our contacts want to receive the email at all of their addresses. We've uploaded as separate addresses. I'm not sure Emma will accept the colon separater.

I'm never quite sure if an "Add and Update" will remove the two people with the same name but two different email addresses. Meaning I import Susan Smith, and Susan Smith,

Yes. Enter them as separate contacts.

@Liz "Add and Update" is based upon email address. So no, Susan and Susan will create two contacts (if they don't exist) or update the approprate contacts by email if they do.

What if a contact has recently signed up with a new email address? She's listed as an error with her former emails address, but I'd like to track her under only one. Can that be done?

Hi Cynthia! I want to make sure I'm following: Say is in Error status, and she just signed up with You want to only track her under this new address, is that right?

If so, it sounds like you're all set -- You'll make sure is in the appropriate audience group(s) so that she can be included in your future sends.

Well, not exactly what I had in mind. Is there a way to transfer her history to the new email address?

Hi Cynthia! I'm stepping in for Katie while she's out of the office. 

If you want to maintain the contact history for the email address that is in error status, you can simply update the original contact record with the new email address. You can think of it as merging the records. You will need to manually update the email address and switch the contact back to active status. You may also want to delete the new contact record so that you don't send to that audience member twice.

Since the update, this approach no longer works. How do I merge two accounts now? I want to maintain the history, but use a new email address. Anytime I attempt to change the email in the original account it switches me back to the newly created one.

Hey there, you'll first need to change the new one that you've created to something different.  

The NEW address cannot already be a contact in Emma, else it will just open up the new one when you try to change the old.  This is what I would do:

1. Change the NEW address to something different.
2. Then you could change the OLD address TO the new address. 
3. Make sure to change the status of that made up address to ERROR or OPTOUT to ensure you don't send to that address.
