Click tracking on personalized URLs?

We are creating links in our emails by creating a contact field that holds a URL, then using personalization to pull that link into our emails. (This is necessary as our recipient list is made up of several groups who need to be directed to different pages, but we want to send out one email for all of them.)

The emails are functioning just fine, but we're finding that we have no clicks reported. We know people have clicked through because we have activity from our emails on the pages we're linking to. Can you tell me why links created with personalization are not tracking, and if there's anything we can do to correct this?

Hi Katie,

Thank you for reaching out about this! When someone clicks a PURL in your mailing, they're clicking a unique link that is specific only to them based on the information that link pulled into the mailing from their contact record. There isn't a way to track who clicked your PURL, because that link becomes several unique links when you send it out, and that information doesn't redirect back to Emma for tracking purposes. Similarly, email addresses used as PURL's aren't trackable because the link is directed to the recipient's email client as opposed to being directed/redirected through Emma's servers.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any questions, or if I can assist you further.

We just joined as an agency.  This is a feature that I didn't even think to ask about because every other ESP we have worked with (both our homegrown solution that is over 5 years old) and other client ESPs) support this.  We need the ability to direct client customers to a customized landing page using unique pre-constructed obfuscated URLs - but you can't do marketing success metrics without click reports.  Very disappointed.  Why is this not a database lookup to the email address at the time of click and a redirect instead of a hard-coded PURL in the email?

Hi Barry,

Thank you for your feedback!  I hate to hear you're disappointed about the inability to track personalized URLs. I understand how important this is to your marketing needs. I'm happy to pass your thoughts along in the form of a feature request to get it in front of our developers for consideration when introducing future iterations of the application.

This is a feature that we need too.  Being able to track clicks on emails and also deliver parameterized URLs to end users shouldn't be mutually exclusive.

We need this, too.  It is critical to our success metrics.

Has there been any update on tracking PURLs? Is this something that will be available in the future?

Hey there folks!  I wanted to check back in on here with some exciting news!

We can now create trackable PURLs in Emma!

To create a trackable PURL in the editor, you'll need to use a different method of bringing in the personalization.  You'll want to use [[field_name]]  (or, the "double-bracket" tag) instead of using the [% member:field_name %] (or, "bracket-percent").

Using the double-bracket tag will create a redirect link that will reach out to Emma to grab the information, thus creating a single, trackable link.  There are a few important things to note about using this tag:

1.  If using the “double bracket” method for an entire URL AND you're using the Drag and Drop Editor, the
link in your member field CANNOT have “HTTP://”, as Emma will add that
automatically if there's not one immediately present and it will break the link.

2. The information that is used to create the link
is pulled in AT THE TIME OF CLICK, NOT THE TIME OF SEND.  Because of this, if the information in the member record changes, the link will change along with it, since it's not printing the information into the email, but rather linking back to Emma to get the information at the time of CLICK.

3.  The good news here is that the links will track in Emma and show on the heat map, just like your normal links.

That's it!  Let me know if you have any questions!

Hi Grey,

Pretty exciting news on pURLs! We've been using the bracket-percent approach and then tracking the click throughs in GA. It'll be great to track them via Emma.

However, I'm not getting the new approach to work - I 'm hoping you may see something I'm not. I started with this, in our own coded email:
<a href="https://elmhurst.me/[% member: purl-email-1 %]"; style="color: #000" target="_blank">View online</a>

It worked great, sending the user to the correct pURL (which is just https://elmhurst.me/alphanumeric-string, such as "0A0G0133458"). The links worked as desired, but Emma didn't track clicks on those links.

Now I'm testing:
<a href="https://elmhurst.me/[[purl-email-1]]"; style="color: #000" target="_blank">View online</a>

It doesn't seem to carry the pURL forward. The link just sends the user to the root domain. I'm happy to follow up with the help desk offline but I thought I'd ask if you saw anything funky in my evolved links.

TIA

Hey Doug,

Thanks for reaching out!

I was able to pop into your account and play around a bit with your code.

When I sent a test to myself, it did bring the pURL forward, but it wasn't creating the trackable redirect link.

I'm wondering if it's because the code in your mailing doesn't conform to our standards for using your own code, as there are certain things that are built into the code of the template that it could be fighting with.

Check out this documentation :   https://support.e2ma.net/Resource_Center/Account_how-to/top-ten-html-tips

Can I get you to adjust your code to fit those standards and then see if that works.

Let me know!

Grey,

Thanks for checking it out. I'm happy to explore the Emma standards, and getting our pURLs into compliance (although it'll likely be next week).

I'll update you when I have something to share!

Has there been any resolution for this? We are implementing the same thing and are having varied results. It's tracking the clicks, however gmail folks aren't being redirected and are just getting blank page links.

Hey Bryan,

That sounds like perhaps a different issue if your links are breaking.  Can you point me to the sub-account and a mailing so I can take a look?

Yes, thanks for taking a look! Our sub account i'm referring to is Ronald McDonald House Charities and the campaign mailing was titled "2017_6-16 June Superhero Email". Please let me know what you find. When i view the email on my android it's working correctly and the redirect is fine, however we found that anyone viewing the email on the gmail app on an iphone is having issues and the redirect does not work.

hey Bryan, since you're working with a lot of URLs and personalization, could we move this chat to email so I can sort out a few things?  What's the best address to reach you?
