A big change is on its way. But unlike your popping knees after a leisurely hike and a headache after that second glass of wine, this is a positive change: Your Response page is soon to include more data and results. We’ve heard time and again that access to data helps you become better marketers, and delivering what’s important to you is important to us.

Our iPhone response app Metric includes too many goodies not to share with all, so later this summer, you'll see these new measurements, inspired by Metric:

Mailing score
The mailing score factors in open rate, click-through rate, shares percentage, opt-out percentage and signup percentage along with the use of split testing to give you a number on a 10-point scale and compare it to averages of 45,000 customers and millions of emails that go out through Emma. Use the mailing score for an at-a-glance way to understand the success of your email marketing program.

Opens by device (Great idea, Jessica!)
See whether your recipients viewed your email on their desktop or a mobile device. Knowing how many of your contacts are opening on mobile can help you determine how big of a consideration mobile optimization needs to be in your email design process. Our guess is that it will be big. :)

Opens by client
Learn which email client -- like Outlook or Apple Mail -- your recipients used to view your email. (Opens by device and client are only tracked in mailings sent on or after April 1, 2014.)

Click analysis
Click to display the content performance overlay to get a visual for where within your email your recipients clicked, and take these learnings to inform image, text and link placement in future mailings.

Toggle from webview to summary for different presentations.

Click here to get early access to this new page, and share your impressions below! How will you use this data?

I believe if you don't measure it, you can't improve it. 55% of my website traffic and 58% of my website conversions are from mobile users. So, I'm hoping this could be the secret sauce I've been looking for to take email marketing to the next level.

"The day may come when we can segment mailing lists into likely mobile and desktop users. If that happens, we could target entirely different content to those segments. Wouldn't that be a good tool to have in the toolbox?"

WOW! YES!!!!!!

Mobile users probably have a different set of expectations than desktop users, too. They interact with the content on a different level. And, their attention span is probably shorter as well. So, I can see the need to produce and package content differently for mobile and desktop users.

LOL I'll also add that I am one of those people that checks my email at 6:30 in the morning with one eye open cause I'm half asleep, before even rolling out of bed.  Most of the time my email sound on my phone wakes me up before my alarm does.  Funny you mentioned that!

Brandi, I bought my wife an iPad mini 2 years ago. The charger cord is constantly left plugged in on her nightstand. She has the tablet in her hands when she goes to bed at night, and she is checking it when her feet hit the floor first thing in the morning.

Hi Katie,
I just signed up for early access to the new Response screen in my own account. As a private label agency, will this enable me to get a preview of what my clients will be seeing?
I'm also wondering if the info about the Metric app will be in the new Response section for us private label agencies.
Thanks!

Hello! Yes, this will give you a preview of the Response page on its way for your clients.

Information about the Metric app will not be in the Response section, since it includes Emma-specific information and not all accounts display Emma branding. You might consider adding your vote here for a white-labeled version of Metric.

I really like the new more visual layout. However, I report on the % of clicks for each link in an email, but that information is no longer readily available. How about adding the % back for the clicks?

Excellent! We're digging into the click map issue to see why some mailings aren't displaying the click activity, thanks for the head's up there as well.

The click activity doesn't seem to be working.  I also noticed that on the overview tab it says that I had 108 unique clicks, but when I click on the tab it says I only had 88 unique clicks.  The last thing I saw was that I can't see all of my mailing (width) at the same time.  I have to scroll over to see the right side.  I have a responsive template so that shouldn't be the reason.

Other than those few things it looks really good!

Thanks for your help.  The click map seems to work on some of the mailings, just not on the most recent ones.  Same with the viewing screen width.

I think we've narrowed down the issue with the click map to mailings that had Google Analytics added from the Review & send page. We're still digging, but we're definitely getting closer!

For the viewing width, it looks like long URLs are forcing the column to stretch in that frame, instead of wrapping like they do in the mailing. We're going to look into that as well.

I'm sorry for the trouble here! This is exactly why we wanted to turn it on early for a handful of accounts, so we can see how the new page interacts with actual customer mailings. We really appreciate your help and patience, and hope to have these issues addressed early next week.

Dang! I stepped out to take a break from work and get a little ice cream, and this forum just lit up before I got back. :)

I'm poking around to find everything, and I like what I see so far. But, my click map overlay of the the mailing does not show anything -- just ghosted white. I tried refreshing the page, but no change.

Using Google Chrome on Win7. I'll check this on Mac OSX next.

Love this new response section.  The only thing is when I try to use the click analysis, I hover over the green circle, and another bubble pops up above it, but nothing is in the bubble?  Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks! We'll add that to our list of things to look into. And just to confirm, you're seeing all of the bubbles like that, across all mailings?

I looked at my last 3 mailings and yes, they are all like that.

One other thing I just noticed - Also, it was kind of strange to me the mailing scores:

May e-newsletter - 49% open rate, 9.1 score

June e-newsletter - 38% open rate, 8.8 score

July e-newsletter - 31% open rate, 10 score

Seemed odd that the 30% open rate would have a 10 as a score when a 49% open rate only had a 9.1 score?  Or does it look at more than just the open rate to give you a score?

PSS...I think I figured out that the click through rates were higher on the July than the June and May so it might have played into why the score was higher.  :)

That's a great question, I'm glad you brought it up! The mailing score factors in open rate, click-through rate, shares percentage, opt-out percentage and signup percentage along with the use of split testing to give you a number on a 10-point scale.

While the July newsletter only had a 31% open rate (which is still above average), it had a whopping 35% click rate, whereas May's newsletter with the 49% open rate saw an 11% click rate. Keep doing what you're doing, it's working! :)

I've had a chance to review some of my older mailings in the New Response page, and the open stats are seriously under-reporting. Example: my newsletter sent March 18, 2014 shows only 218 opens in the new response page. But when I export, the summary shows  4825 opens.

Hi, Kelli.
Understood.  I don't intend to sound impatient. I'm just reporting what I see so far.

Let me ask a general question. Within the breakdown of opens by device, are tablets reported in desktop or mobile numbers?

Thx!
Ted

Tablet opens are reported under the mobile device category.

Hi Ted - great news! Thanks to your reporting this morning, we were able to find and fix the issue that was causing older mailing stats to stall. If you open your March 18 mailing Response, it should look a lot better than it did this morning!

Thanks again for your help, and don't hesitate to give us a shout if you notice anything else.

Just a FYI, I'm using Firefox 24.4.0 and have no problem seeing the "bubbles" with clicks as well as all the other new features. I've checked some of my previous mailings, and the stats look correct. So, all is not bad news!

Hi Emma team,

You have sent me an email for early access for the new response metrics. However, when I click on the link there is nothing new under the response tab! I have tried it in different browsers.

Cheers,

Sanj

As of right now, I don’t believe that information is available on the API because it’s using a different platform to return those numbers. I’ll see what I can find out and keep you posted!

Hey there,

Thanks for the question. The extra layer of details around opens — by device and by client — are not available via the API. We've talked about making this data available but it's not on the immediate roadmap. We collect and store this data differently than the rest of your response metrics, so we want to make sure we have an efficient way of providing access to the full picture.

The mailing score itself is a calculation based on the data current available in the GET /#account_id/response/#mailing_id endpoint, but we don't have plans to expose the score directly.

I hope that helps!

Okay, I upgraded the browser and clear cookies etc. Still some of my past mailings don't have the click bubbles and others do. The July 22 and July 31 mailings don't show the bubbles. All of the others since July 14th do.

It looks as though you used Google Analytics in those two mailings, and using Google Analytics prevents the click map from displaying.

Hi Cynthia,
Just to clarify, we found an issue the other day with the click bubbles not appearing on mailings that used Google Analytics. We've been able to address the problem and are planning to release the update early next week so those bubbles display on *all* mailings.

Sorry for the confusion, have a great weekend!

One other question.  On the overview tab it has listed the amount of opens, clicks, etc, but when I click on the 'opens' tab it has a different number.  Same with clicks.  Which one is the correct number?  Also, in the top right it says I sent 21,701 emails, but the list of contacts that I sent it to only has 18,019 contacts.

Hi there! I'm moving your post into a new conversation so we can research and hone in on why this is happening. Please reference the new topic here: Response overview numbers don't match tabs
