Is there an easy way to create a segment of people that did NOT open and email for a specific campaign?

Hi Jay!

Thanks for reaching out, and good question. Is the goal to send a follow-up email to just the non-openers? If so, there's a really simple way to do this by excluding those who opened (meaning that only the non-openers will be sent the email).  I'll step you through that first:

1. Go to the Response overview page for the specific mailing. Click on the number for 'opens' to bring up a list of everyone who opened that mailing. Then, click the button that says 'save this tab as a segment'. This will save the opens as a segment.

2. Go to Review and Send for the mailing you're wanting to send to the non-openers. After entering your recipients, check the little box underneath the recipient field that says 'exclude a segment', and then choose the segment you just created for the openers of the specific mailing. The mailing will only send to contacts who didn't open the original mailing.

If you're not looking to send to just the non-openers, and you need to actually see or export a list of the non-openers, take a look at the steps found here for creating a segment to find these contacts.  Let me know if you have questions about this, and I'll be glad to help!

Hi Adriane -

Quick question regarding sending an eblast to only those who didn't open the last campaign.

Is there a way to confirm that the new eblast won't be sent to the ones that opened the last campaign? I have scheduled a new campaign to only the ones that didn't open it last, but just want to make sure I'm not sending it to everyone again.

Thank you for your time!

Hey there Clemens Food Group!

If you followed the steps above and EXCLUDED the segment of folks that opened, then it will not send to everyone.

There's not a process in place that shows you beforehand who it's being sent to.

If you'd like to double-check it yourself, you can open the segment of "Opens", COPY THEM TO A NEW GROUP, then run a new Segment looking for people "IN" the original group that you sent to and "Not In" the group that you copied the opens to. This is the manual way of doing it that we do automatically if you use the "Exclude a segment" tool.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Hi Grey -

Thank you for your quick response. I followed the steps and am 99.9% sure it won't send to the people who already opened the eblast. I just wanted to know if there was a way on your end that you could let us know. The alternative solution will work though! Thanks!

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Same Email- Multiple Rounds.

I haven't seen anything with this exact situation so it could be an idea.
We sent out an email blast on upcoming changes for our client experience, we want to make sure everyone see's it. I don't want to resend to the people that have already opened the first round of the email. What/if would be the best way to send this email out again NOT including the people that already opened it?

Hi there Ontech, I believe what you're looking for is our "exclude a segment" function, using a segment made of the folks who opened the original mailing.

Adriane describes that process above!

Let me know if you have any questions!

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Help with a reminder email!.

Is there a way to send a reminder email but scrub out any person that has opened the email within the Emma system or do i need to upload the open and export into excel and scrub out opens myself? Thank you!

Hi there!   I've merged your question in to this earlier post of (effectively) the same question.  See Adriane's answer above for the process we've built to easily resend to folks who haven't opened.

let me know if you have any questions!

Hi Jay

This function works fine if I make two submissions.
for example:
- the first time I sent 100 people, 20 opened the mail.
- I create an exclusion list of this 20 people
- the second time I send the 100 to the less than 20 who opened the previous email, 80 people in total, this time they open my mail 15 people.
-create an exclusion list of this 15 people

- but the third time I do the sending, it allows me to select only ONE exclusion list, where I must choose if I send 100 minus 20 of the first submissionsor less or 15 people of the second submissions.

Is there any way to go joining several exclusion lists?

Hey Nicolás,

That's a GREAT question!  I wasn't able to identify your account, and there are actually currently two versions of the segment builder.

Both should be able to accomplish this, but it just may look different for you.

What you want to do is manually create a segment that looks for folks who opened the first email OR the other email.  The 'OR' bit of that is the important bit.

This is what that looks like in my account (with the newer segment builder):

That's one way to do it.  The other way would involve slightly more steps, but you could copy the contacts from both of the "Opens" segments into a new group, say "TOTAL OPENS" or something like that.  Then, with all of the contacts in a single group, you would just need to create a segment that is just looking for contacts in that group.

I mention this one in case you plan to do more mailings and would need to add more people into that TOTAL group.  Say if you were doing a 4th and 5th and 6th mailing.  Then you can dump all of the opens into that one group and just have the single segment (based off of that group) that you're using to exclude.

Let me know if you have any additional questions on that!   And if you need me to pop into your account and take a look, please let me know the name of your account or the username and I'll take a look!
