Hi,

One of our newsletters requires uploading HTML into Emma. I
have tried using both the "Freestyle HTML" option and the "Upload Your
Own HTML" tablet and they are not working. The former gives me an error
message when I try to save my html, and the latter won't even open. I
have tried pasting the code from both text wrangler and text edit. I
have also tried this in three different browsers (Chrome, Firefox, and
Safari) and I have also restarted my computer.

PLEASE HELP!

Sorry to hear you’re having trouble! It sounds like there may be something in your code that’s throwing Emma. I suggest checking out this conversation for some links to HTML help, since we aren’t coders here. I do know that you won’t want to use tags like doctype, html, meta and head.

Let me know if you’re still having trouble after that!

Hi Katie,

I did read that conversation actually (I should have mentioned that). I removed all those tags. And the error message I get just says "Whoops, something went wrong. Please try again." It doesnt say whether it's clientside or server-side. But it appears to be server side?

Hi Jenny! Would you mind dropping the HTML code you’re using into a .txt file and adding it to your document library? I’ll grab it from there to take a look.

Thanks, Jenny! I’m seeing a few things here:

First, your links have tracking applied to them:

http://bkmag.coursehorse.com/?utm_source=02.06.2014LMAG%2BNewsletter&utm_medium=Email%2BStandard...

I’m curious to know why the tracking is already applied instead of using Google Analytics upon sending. I’m also interested in the image sources, like this:

https://my.sailthru.com/ssl?url=http%3A%2F%2Fcoursehorse.com%2Fmodules%2Fcourse%2Fimages%2F01.24.201...

While the image links for for me, I’m not sure what ssl?url is meant to mean. Perhaps an encryption? Have you tried removing this tracking and encryption to see if it changes how your code saves?

The second thing I notice is that there’s a point where the editor changes how it handles the code. Code like div and table tags should be brown, with attributes applied to them being blue and regular text being black. Here’s a screenshot showing where it changes:

Let me know if editing those links does the trick!

Hi Katie,

Unfortunately I cannot remove those tracking links. This mailout is part of a partnership with Course Horse and those tracking links lead to their servers. That being said, I also have uploaded code in the past and have never had issues before.

Jenny, are you able to remove them temporarily to see if that’s the culprit and if doing so allows you to save? I’m afraid we’re a bit limited here: We actually don’t troubleshoot HTML, since we aren’t coders and Emma’s a self-service tool, but in pooling all my resources, examining those links is our suggestion; I pulled in our Editor Team’s product owner, and she suggested the same.

Sadly no, but the time has passed for this mailout and so we will have to do a makeup email this Thursday. Hopefully our HTML/ the uploading HTML option will be corrected by then.

I’m sorry to hear it, Jenny. I want to be clear that there isn’t anything amiss with the HTML uploading option; rather, there seems to be something in the code that’s conflicting with HTML for email. I really do suggest trying your code first without the applied tracking and encryption and then slowly adding it back to find where it’s amiss.

I’m afraid we may have reached our limit with the amount of HTML troubleshooting I can do, but I’m glad to try my hand at any other questions.
