Validate import before continuing

I would be helpful if Emma validated an import file prior to beginning the import. For example, I might upload a large .xlsx file, associate multiple fields, select groups, start the import, THEN it tells me something is formatted weird on line 1,226.

Is it possible for Emma to perform that validation when the file is first uploaded, or is it dependent on the fields you associate with each column?

Hi Matt! I believe the latter is the case, that it's dependent upon the associated fields (for example, if you try to map text in your spreadsheet to a field that was created as a numeral field, the import will fail). I'm checking in with our product teams to make sure, though, and will keep you posted.

Yep, that's the case: We don't know whether an import will fail until after the field mappings. For instance, if you accidentally map first names to a date field, that will probably fail, but we can't anticipate that before the fact.

We are working through some new import work that will drastically improve the importing process in general. One of the improvements is that upon an import's failure, we'll report all of the errors in the import stats window, and the error reporting is much better than it is now. So after one failure, you'll of the information to fix what's wrong with the import and then run it again.

Hopefully this will cut down on the problem we see with having to run an import multiple times in order to find all of the errors. Let me know if you have any questions, Matt!

That makes sense, thanks Katie. The change you described will be an enormous help.
