When someone is added to a list, do they have to follow the step in the email to confirm the subscription or is there a way to override this?

Good Afternoon,

Confirmed status is just a second step for users to be able to confirm their opt in to your audience.

This is not necessary for sending, so feel free to send to any newly added contacts within your audience!

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled why aren't new subscribers opted in?.

I have set up our sign up form.  When someone subscribes using that form, I receive a notification email.  However, when I go to their record in Emma, it says they have not opted in.  How can they have subscribed but not opted in?

Hi there!   I believe what you're seeing there is the "CONFIRM" opt-in.  That just means that they didn't click the link in the confirmation email to confirm that they wanted to opt-in.

That is not required for sending.  It's just a system in place to allow for a double-confirmation, if you so choose to use that.

Let me know if you have any questions on that!

For legal reasons we need to maintain an opt in list. Would you recommend we include the confirmation email and does the system automatically send it to them when the thank you email is activated?

Hey there!   If you need to collect double-opt in information, there are a few ways to do that.

If you're using an Emma signup form, you can make sure that the form is set to send the confirmation mailing that includes the confirmation link.

Alternately, if you'd like to send a prettier one, you can create your own opt-in confirmation link in a mailing and put it under a button or an image or whatever you'd like.

To do that, you just use this code:  [% optin_confirm_url %]

You can paste that code in wherever you'd put a normal URL in a button, image, or text and it will create a URL specific to each contact.

When your contacts click that link, it will add a time-stamp in their contact record for when they confirmed the opt-in that you can then use to segment and locate those folks, or export the information for your records.

Does that answer your question?  Let me know if you need more info!
